East Anglia's Leading Rock & Roll Band Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro |
|
FOREWORD This is Tony's main guitar. It plays beautifully, has a rich, organic sound and is versatile, capable of everything from heavy rock, through to blues and jazz. HISTORY The Berlin Pro was the top model in the range. Materials and construction place it in the Gibson camp, but the body size and pickup switching make it a more versatile guitar, capable of reasonable interpretations of both Les Paul and Stratocaster sounds. Little is known of this guitar's early life, but Tony bought it in 2003 from another guitarist who had not rated it very highly. It was in good condition structurally, but looked and sounded very lacklustre and needed a considerable amount of work to bring it up to the required standard. SPECIFICATION Made: 1993; Serial number: BP 12-93 2193; Body: Mahogany with a single piece maple cap; Neck: Mahogany with an ebony fret board; Tuners: locking Sperzels; Bridge: Wilkinson VS100 locking vibrato; Pickups: Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II at the neck, Seymour Duncan Custom Custom at the bridge; Controls: 3-way selector, volume with integral push/pull switch to the tap neck pickup, tone with integral push/pull switch to tap the bridge pickup. MODIFICATIONS The old wax finish was removed and the body and neck were sanded to provide a smooth surface for the final finish. After applying 14 coats of Liberon finishing oil, the whole surface was flattened and then buffed to a deep patina. The 3-way rotary selector was changed for a conventional tone control and a new volume pot fitted, each with integral push/pull switches so that the new Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II at the neck and Custom Custom at the bridge could be tapped independently. Nickel plated pickup covers, cream pickup surrounds and new knobs completed the alterations. More pictures and information here.
